DON'T PICK UP THE PHONE TO SEND YOUR NEXT MAILGRAM MESSAGE!
You can use THE SOURCE's Mailgram* Service (MGRAM from Command Level) to
send as many messages as you like, exactly the way you want them. If
you send your SOURCE Mailgram message before 4 p.m. EST, on a business
day, it's virtually guaranteed next business day delivery anywhere in
the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii) and Canada.
You can maintain multiple address lists on THE SOURCE for frequent mass
mailings and use MGRAM's file loading features, or you can use the text
editor, which enables you to make changes with minimum effort.
The cost of sending Mailgram messages through THE SOURCE is competitive
with other methods. You pay by the word, but the more addresses you send
your message to, the less each one will cost. All messages you send will
be strictly confidential. No one will read your message other than the
recipient. MGRAM offers a host of Special Services like confirmation
copies, mailing list entry and storage. Try the Special Services option
from the lead menu.

SENDING A MAILGRAM THROUGH THE SOURCE IS A SNAP!
After selecting Item 5 on the MGRAM Table of Contents, you will be asked
to enter an ADDRESS FILE NAME or press Return. (This is your mailing-list
file. See MGRAM SHORTCUTS for details.)
If you're not loading a file, press Return and the address form will appear.
All you have to do is enter the information after each prompt, like this:
1 Name: Bert Alert
2 Company: Fastkill Exterminating Co.
3 : (Use this space if you need it or press Return)
4 Street : 2007 Chelsea Way
5 City: Los Angeles
6 State/Province: Ca
California? Y
7 Zip: 22102
After completing this form you can change any entry one line at a time.
Be sure to enter the correct city, state and zip code (On Mailgrams sent
to Canada, zip codes are optional; also, CANADA must not be entered as part
of the address). When you're done,
you will be prompted to enter another address. Press Return at the "Name:"
prompt when you have entered all the addresses you want.
If you have an address list you'll want to use again, enter it here. You
will be prompted later in the program to SAVE it, and the next time you
want to use it, you can load it.
ENTERING TEXT
-------------
Next, you will see "Enter Text File Name or Press Return:". If you plan to
enter your message here rather than load an existing file (see MGRAM
SHORTCUTS), press Return and begin entering your message after the
line number appears. Mailgram messages will be sent with 40 lines on the
first page, and 52 lines on each subsequent page. DO NOT EXCEED 68 CHAR-
ACTERS PER LINE OR YOUR MESSAGE WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY REFORMATTED, AND
MAY NOT BE SENT THE WAY IT APPEARS ON YOUR SCREEN.
The following characters may be used in your message. Any characters
other than the ones listed here will not be transmitted in your
Mailgram message:
Letters A - Z Numbers 0 - 9
- Hyphen + Plus
& Ampersand * Asterisk
? Question Mark % Percent
: Colon / Slash
$ Dollar Sign , Comma
' Apostrophe . Period
; Semicolon " Quotes
! Exclamation Point
( Left Parenthesis
) Right Parenthesis
If you use any character other than the ones listed here, it will appear
as a blank space in your message.
To insert blank lines, press the space bar and then press Return. When you
have finished entering your message, press Return after the line number
appears, and you will see the prompt: "Do you want to make changes using
the text editor?"
Answer YES if there are changes to be made. Refer to THE SOURCE User's Manual
under the section CREATING AND COMPUTING on page 249, for
details on using the editor. Once you have finished making changes, you
must type FILE (while in the EDIT mode) to be returned to the MGRAM program.
Answer NO at the prompt to use the text editor if there are no changes to
be made.
CONFIRMATION COPIES
-------------------
The next prompt is "Do you want a confirmation Mailgram message mailed
to you?"
A confirmation copy is a duplicate of the message you sent--THE SOURCE
offers two kinds. You can get one copy, addressed to you with only the
text of your message, or you can receive a copy of every MGRAM you send,
each one including one recipient's name and address.
You must answer YES to receive one or more copies of your message. You
will be prompted later to indicate whether you want a copy of each recip-
ient's message, or just one copy of the MGRAM you're sending, but you must
answer YES to this prompt first. Once you do that, the address form will
appear. Fill in YOUR name and address. After the address form is properly
filled out, the second prompt pertaining to Confirmation Copies will appear.
Do you want a separate confirmation copy of each recipient's MGRAM?
Answering NO will mean that you will get just ONE copy of your message.
If you answer YES, you will receive in the mail the same number of
confirmations as Mailgram messages you are sending. Each confirmation
will include one recipient's name and address. (See RATES for Confirmation
Copy discounts.)
The final prompt "Send, Save or Both?" will then appear.
Enter SEND to send the Mailgram message without saving the
message text or address(es).
Enter SAVE to store the message and address in new files that
can be sent later.
Enter BOTH to save copies of your message and address list
and send your Mailgram message.
If you enter SAVE or BOTH, you will be asked to assign two file names; one
for the address(es) and one for the message. These files may be recalled
from your User File Directory (UFD) at any time. From Command Level, type
SLIST (FILE NAME) to get a printout of any file or ED (FILE NAME) to edit
any file. If you've entered BOTH, your Mailgram message will be sent auto-
matically once the file names are assigned.
Be sure to send your Mailgram message before 4 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
Monday through Friday to virtually guarantee next business day delivery
anywhere in the U.S. (including Alaska and Hawaii), and Canada. If for any
reason you are disconnected from THE SOURCE before you get a chance to send
your MGRAM, a temporary file, designated by a "T$" prefix, will be created
in your UFD.
NAVIGATIONAL COMMANDS
---------------------
This database differs from most of the new databases on THE SOURCE when
it comes to navigating through it. Some of the prompts will accept only
the information requested or QUIT. Most of the prompts will accept any
of the following commands:
P............................To return to the PREVIOUS prompt
HELP.........................For detailed instruction tailored to a
specific prompt.
Q or QUIT....................Provided you enter this BEFORE you send
your Mailgram message, QUIT will take
you to Command Level without sending
any messages.
BREAK.......................To go to Command Level.
COMMAND STRINGING
-----------------
Once you become familiar with the MGRAM database, you won't need to go
through the Table of Contents to get information or send messages. Using
the COMMAND STRINGS listed below, you can save time and go directly to the
option you want from Command Level.
ENTER THE
COMMAND STRING: FOR THE MGRAM:
> MGRAM.............Table of Contents
> MGRAM OVER........Overview
> MGRAM INSTRUCT....Instructions
> MRGAM RATES.......Rates
> MGRAM SERVICES....Special Services
> MGRAM SEND........Send Messages

2 MGRAM Shortcuts Using Files
Enter item number or HELP 2
The simplest and fastest way to send a SOURCE MAILGRAM is to LOAD the
address(es) and messages from separate files you've already created. Message
files can be created while using the MGRAM program or by creating files
with a word processor or THE SOURCE text editor, and storing them in your
User File Directory until you're ready to use them. Each message text
must adhere to the set format, and no text line may exceed 68 characters
in length. Refer to your User's Manual under the section on CREATING AND
AND COMPUTING on pages 249 for details on using the text editor.
Since address list must conform precisely to the MGRAM format, you're
best advised to enter your address list while in the MGRAM program,
and SAVE it for later use. Do not attempt to match the format on
your own, or your list will not be accepted when it comes time to
SEND your Mailgram messages.
--LOADING FILES--
-----------------
To load an Address File, simply enter the file name like this:
"Enter Address File Name or Press Return:" ADDRESSES
(one-word file names only)
To load a Text File, simply enter the file name like this:
"Enter Text File Name or Press Return:" SALES
(one-word file names only)
Be sure you've signed your message before loading it!
After entering your address and text files you will be able to request
confirmation copies. (See BASIC INSTRUCTIONS for details.)
The next prompt will be "Send, Save, or Both?" Enter SEND. There's no
need to SAVE your files because they have already been created and reside
in your disk storage area, or are part of your (UFD).
(Note: This file storage rate is the same as for any files maintained
in your UFD.)
